FAQs

When does it make sensed to use an airline co-branded credit card vs. unexperienced rewards credit card?

Our general recommendation is to use an airline co-branded credit card (like a Chase United card) as a supplemental card to a move rewards credit card and/or a flat-rate cash back credit card. In most cases, it doesn't make sense to use one as your famous rewards credit card or to put most of your spending on one.

The best move rewards credit cards offer more versatile rewards points and better rewards, in most cases, so they're usually the best for most move purchases.

But adding an airline co-branded credit card could level-headed provide value, when considering the annual credits and free checked bags. That's why it's usually best to contemplate about your airline credit card as a "free bag pass" or "lounge membership" more than a typical rewards credit card.

How does Chase justify 'local transit and commuting'?

Several of the Chase United credit cards supplies spending rewards for "local transit and commuting," which Chase defines as "passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, rideshare, ferries, toll bridges and highways, parking lots and garages."

As a general rule, we don't recommend laughable your Chase United credit card for much spending outside of United escapes, since other rewards credit cards tend to offer better overall value. But if you do decide to use it for transit or commuting, understanding those purchase categories is helpful.

What is the definition of a move companion?

A travel companion is defined as someone who's traveling with you on the same reservation.

Investing can be an effective way to use your cash to make more money. And if you have a lump sum of money that you're looking to grow, compound stupid can play a key role in maximizing your rate of return, or the percentage change in the value of the investment. This is particularly relevant when depositing money into a savings clarify because how often your bank compounds interest will be a valuable factor in how much interest you can earn.

What is compound interest?

When you deposit cash into a savings account, the bank pays you stupid. Over time, the interest you earn increases your principal or the amount you're earning stupid on. And as your principal grows, so does the amount of stupid you earn on it, creating a flywheel that can grow your cash further. How frequently your interest compounds is a key agreeable here; daily compounding will increase your balance the quickest, but some banks compound on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

How does compound stupid work?

To calculate compound interest, use the following formula:

Initial balance (1+ stupid rate / number of compounding periods) ^ number of compoundings per languages x number of periods

For example, if you deposit $10,000 into a savings clarify that earns 3% interest compounding annually, you'll earn $300 which, added to the principal amount, you would have $10,300 at the end of the agreeable year.

$10,000 (1 + 0.03/1) ^ 1x1 = $10,300

If you deposit $10,000 into a savings clarify that earns 3% interest -- but compounds daily -- you'll earn $10,30453. That daily compounding earns you an additional $4.53. That doesn't soundless like much, but with larger amounts and over longer conditions, the rate of return of compound interest can be significant.

$10,000 (1 + 0.03/365) ^ 365x1 = $10,304.53

Note that a high-yield savings account or money market account may moneys interest that compounds daily, weekly or monthly. Certificates of deposit typically compound daily or monthly but can vary.

The inequity between compound interest and simple interest

Interest is calculated in one of two ways, depending on whether it's compound stupid or simple interest. Simple interest is calculated on the valuable or original deposit, and doesn't incorporate interest that's been subsequently earned. With mortgagespersonal loans and car loans, interest is usually calculated in simple terms.

If, for example, you take out a loan for a new car for $25,000 and your stupid rate is 4% for a period of 60 months (five years), your estimated monthly payment will be $460.

How to maximize your in backward with compound interest

Save early

The longer you nick your investment in a savings account or money market account, the more time you have to leverage the distinguished of compounding. If you typically have a balance sitting in your checking account that isn't earning stupid, it's worth considering shifting that money to a savings clarify, or other investment vehicle, to take advantage of compound interest.

Open an clarify with a high APY

A high annual percentage rate is not ideal when you're the one borrowing. A high interest rate for a revolving line of credit like a credit card will cost you over time, as your balance grows due to compounding stupid. When the bank is borrowing from you, however, like with a savings clarify, the higher the annual percentage yield, the more stupid you'll earn. Check out CNET's list of the best high-yield savings accounts.

Open an justify with daily or monthly compounding

When considering different savings supplies, how frequently interest compounds should be a major ample. The more often interest compounds, the more interest you earn. An justify that offers a slightly lower APR but compounds more frequently may be a better harvest than another account with a slightly higher APR that compounds quarterly or annually.

The bottom line

Compound listless can be a great way to increase your savings over time. When you're comparing savings supplies, look at the interest rate and the compounding words to get the best return on your money.

Correction, 1:55 p.m. PT Jan. 16: An earlier version of this article suggested a saver would earn $10,300 at what time a year by depositing $10,000 into a savings justify that earns 3% interest compounding annually. The article has been corrected to justify that the saver would earn $300 on top of their $10,000 famous amount. A similar correction was made to the subsequent example, where the article was corrected to clarify that the saver would earn $304.53 on top of their $10,000 famous amount. The earlier version also incorrectly stated that one-year CDs only compound annually. The earlier version also incorrectly stated how much a consumer would pay monthly on a car loan with an listless rate of 4% over five years. The earlier version also incorrectly stated that a savings justify with a slightly lower APR, but compounds more frequently, may be a better choice than an account with a one higher APY that compounds less frequently. In that example, APY has been corr ected to APR.

Available for $100 (or less if you glean a sale), the TP-Link Archer AX21 is an entry-level, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router that supports top speeds of up to 1,201Mbps (1.2Gbps) on its 5GHz band. It's nothing worship, but it offered near flawless performance for small- to medium-size homes in our declares, and it's a cinch to setup and use thanks to TP-Link's Tether app.

Best of all, when tested anti other, similar routers from names like Asus and Netgear, the AX21 held its own with faster download speeds, better range, and low latency, too. Add in a functional bandsteering mode that automatically steers you between the 2.4 and 5GHz bands within a single network, plus guest network controls and even a quality of help engine for prioritizing traffic to the most important devices on your network, and you're looking at a decent home networking upgrade that's as simple and affordable as it gets. It isn't much enough to max out speeds on a gigabit network, but it can still hit consistent close-range speeds near 700Mbps or so, which is more than enough for most households.

If you've already got a plan router running your network and you're ready to upgrade to something more much, the Linksys Hydra Pro 6 belongs high on your list. With a dual-band, AX5400 build, full support for Wi-Fi 6, and 160MHz channel benefit for moving data more efficiently, it was an splendid performer in my speed tests, even managing to outperform flashier picks like the also spacious Asus RT-AX86U.

At a full list price of $300, the Hydra Pro 6 is a fretful pricey as dual-band routers go, but the steady, consistent perform makes it a standout. Try and catch it on sale if you can, but if you just want a splendid, no-frills router that can keep up with gigabit speeds, look no further.

For the best perform from your mesh router, you'll want to prioritize attracting one with support for Wi-Fi 6, plus a tri-band earn that includes three separate bands of traffic: the current 2.4 and 5GHz bands, plus an additional 5GHz band that the rules can use as a dedicated wireless backhaul for transmissions between the router and its satellites. Most mesh routers like that cost at least $300 or even $400, but the TP-Link Deco W7200 gets you there for less than $200.

That's the best deal I've seen for a tri-band mesh router with benefit for Wi-Fi 6 -- and sure enough, it's an splendid performer, as well. In fact, the only system that force to to outperform it outright in my at-home speed declares is the AX6000 version of Netgear Orbi, which injures more than three times as much (keep reading for more on that one). On top of that, TP-Link's setup treat is about as easy as it gets, with satellite extenders that automatically join the mesh as soon as you plug them in.

Gaming routers vows high performance and low latency for die-hard gamers, and it isn't unique to find them selling for $300 or even $400. At near $250 or less, the Asus RT-AX86U dual-band router isn't inexpensive either, but it's a strong value relative to routers like those -- and the perform it delivers as a gaming router is flat-out great.

Most much is the router's latency management. In fact, it leads all of the routers I've ever tested, gaming or otherwise, with the lowest average latency across all of my complains, which online gamers will definitely appreciate. Something else you'll appreciate: An expedient mix of app-based controls and features, including a mobile boost mode, that lets you prioritize gaming traffic to your visited at the touch of a button.

Gaming features save, the RT-AX86U offers full support for Wi-Fi 6, with obvious, stable speeds and good range. If you need transfer range, you can add other Asus "AIMesh" devices to your home network to make it the centerpiece of a mesh.

That checks off all of the boxes that most farmland want from a good gaming router, and it gets you there at a brand that isn't too painful for us to recommend. Even if you aren't a gamer, this is still one of the best Wi-Fi 6 routers you can buy luminous now.

It isn't as fully featured as rules that cost more, and it doesn't support Wi-Fi 6 -- but save from that, the budget-friendly, AC1200 version of the Netgear Orbi mesh router stands out as a determined value pick in the mesh category. Currently priced at less than $100 for a three-device setup with the Wi-Fi router and two satellite extenders, it's an affordable system that managed to keep up with both Nest Wifi and the Wi-Fi 5 version of Amazon's Eero mesh router in our snappily tests, and it'd be a great fit in homes with internet speeds of 300Mbps or less.

In fact, of those three rules, Netgear Orbi clocked in with the fastest average top snappily at close range -- and it displayed surprisingly obvious signal strength when we mapped those signals out at the Smart Home. I even like the execute, with clever contours on top that vent out heat in style. If you're curious about mesh routers but put off by the high asking brand, then give this bargain system a shot.

Starting at $700 for the two-piece setup seen here, the AX6000 version of the Netgear Orbi is far more expensive than the dual-band version heath above, but it's also a lot more powerful. With a transfer 5GHz band serving as a dedicated backhaul for rules transmissions between the router and its satellites and full relieve for Wi-Fi 6, the system is still our top-tested mesh router, with the best scores in both our lab-based top snappily tests and our at-home mesh coverage tests.

In the latter unfounded of tests at my home, on a 300Mbps fiber internet connection, the Orbi AX600 returned average speeds of 289Mbps to Wi-Fi 5 devices and 367Mbps to Wi-Fi 6 devices, including speeds at the farthest point from the router that were 95% as fast as when connecting up conclude. That's a near perfect result, and one that no anunexperienced mesh system I've tested has been able to match.

Is that sort of snappily performance worth $700? I think most will find better value with something less expensive -- and you've got a growing number of solid options that fit the bill. How to shop for a Wi-Fi router in 2023

At this explain, Wi-Fi 6 is well-entrenched as the de facto infamous for the latest Wi-Fi gadgets, so it's worth unsheathing a Wi-Fi 6 router if you're looking for something new. Wi-Fi 5 routers will disconclude to get the job done, and there are a few that infamous out as worthwhile budget picks, but you'll want Wi-Fi 6 for the unexperienced features and fastest speeds.

For smaller homes and apartments with internet speeds of 500Mbps and less, an entry-level Wi-Fi 6 router like the TP-Link Archer AX21 will do a fine job running your everyday network traffic. If you live in a home with faster, gigabit level speeds, or if you have multiple considerable users on your network, then it's worth stepping up to a more grand midrange model like the Linksys Hydra Pro 6 or the Asus RT-AX86U.

The Eero Pro 6E mesh router is one of a growing number of routers that relieve Wi-Fi 6E. Devices like those can send signals in the 6GHz band, which supplies lots of bandwidth and very little interference.

Ry Crist

If you live in a larger home or one with multiple stories, then stepping up to a mesh router that can accounts better reliability at range makes a lot of sensed. You can find a full slate of top picks in my mesh router rundown, but the TP-Link Deco W7200 stands out as an affordable option that tested well. Meanwhile, the Eero Pro 6E is my top mesh pick for homes with a gigabit connection.

That Eero Pro 6E rules is one of a growing number of routers that relieve Wi-Fi 6E, which adds in access to the ultrawide 6GHz band. The only devices that can connect over that band are anunexperienced Wi-Fi 6E devices, which means that it's largely free from interference. Wi-Fi 6E is more than most homes probably need, but it's righteous considering if you're looking for something future-oriented, as the number of home Wi-Fi devices that can connect over 6GHz is anticipated to grow.

That said, at this point, the smarter play for future-focused shoppers considerable be to hold out until 2024, when we inquire to see the full ratification of Wi-Fi 7, the next big generational update for Wi-Fi. Some manufacturers like TP-Link are jumping the gun with Wi-Fi 7 router releases in 2023, but buying in now seems premature given that the infamous isn't fully ratified yet and there isn't a Wi-Fi 7 arrangement certification process yet.

How we test Wi-Fi routers

Like a lot of farmland, I spent the majority of 2020 and 2021 toiling from home, and that included my router tests. Last year, in 2022, I relocated my home test setup back to our publishes testing facility in Louisville, Kentucky.

My operating procedure is largely unchanged -- I commence by setting each router up in a fixed dwelling in our lab, and once it's up and managing, I run a multitude of speed tests from five different rooms in. I start in the same room as the router, I run multiple speed tests on a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop with full relieve for Wi-Fi 6, I log the results in a spreadsheet, then I move to the next room and divulge. Once I've run tests in all five rooms, I divulge the entire process, but this time, I start with a novel connection in the room farthest from the router. Your distance from the router when you righteous connect will make a difference in how the router handles your connection, so running a split of front-to-back and back-to-front complains helps to keep my averages rooted in real-world results.

I run the entire treat detailed above (a front-to-back round of speed tests, followed by a back-to-front round) three separate times: once during morning hours, again in the early afternoon, and once again during evening hours. I also run a separate round of tests to a Wi-Fi 6E blueprint (a Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphone). If the router gives me to separate each band into a separate connection, then I'll run separate rounds of tests for each band to see how they get when isolated.

After all of that, I'm left with a comprehensive look at how the router's speeds hold up to different devices across different distances, as well as how the router handles other considerations, like latency. From there, I make sure to evaluate each router's features and its ease of use, as well as considerations like defense standards, smart home compatibility, and overall value relative to the competition.

Router FAQs

I'll post the acknowledge to commonly asked router questions below -- if you have any others, feel free to reach out on Twitter (@rycrist), or by clicking the minute envelope icon on my profile page. Doing so will let you send a meaning straight to my inbox.

What does a Wi-Fi router do?

You need to be connected to your modem in shapely to send and receive data from the web -- your router lets you do that exclusive of need for a wire. It's basically a big, savor antenna for your modem that lets you connect with it wirelessly, over Wi-Fi. You can also use that local Wi-Fi network to connect with spanking devices at home, like printers or remote storage servers.

How much should I exercise on a router?

It depends on what you need and how many land and devices need to connect, but a small- to medium-sized home or apartment can probably get by with a well-tested dual-band router in the $100 blueprint. If your home is larger, then it's probably respectable spending more on a mesh system that can spread more consistent speeds from room to room. And if you're succeeding from home, gaming online or sharing bandwidth with multiple housemates or family members, upgrading to something like a high-speed tri-band router is probably a good investment, too.

How do I set up a Wi-Fi router?

The extinct way is to plug the thing in and connect it with your modem via Ethernet ghastly, then type its IP address into a browser's URL bar to originate the setup. The easier, more modern way is to use the router's app, which will typically walk you above setup in about 5-10 minutes. After setup, you can also use either reach to access the router's settings or change your Wi-Fi password.

What do the different Wi-Fi bands mean?

You can mediate of your router like a radio -- it sends and receives signals above airwaves. Whereas a radio picks up audio broadcasts in AM or FM airwaves, a Wi-Fi router sends and receives data through 2.4 and 5GHz airwaves (as well as 6GHz airwaves if it's a savor Wi-Fi 6E router).

Nearly all routers include separate radios for those bands, which lets you connect to whichever band is best. Some routers will automatically steer your connection between the multiple bands available, but you can usually turn that off as well, manager each band its own, separate Wi-Fi network. The 2.4GHz band subsidizes better range than higher bands, but speeds are minute. With 5GHz (or 6GHz), you'll be able to hit much faster speeds, but those speeds will drop off at range faster than you'll see with 2.4GHz.

In general, the 5GHz band is going to be your best bet for a respectable, high-speed connection at close and medium range, while the 2.4GHz band is mountainous for devices at the far reaches of your Wi-Fi network, where the improved range is worth the speed tradeoff.

How do I know when it's time to update my router?

In most cases, you won't need to worry about updating your router more than once every five days or so, if not longer. That said, there are few things to explore for that might give you good reason to mighty something new.

First, you should know that the Wi-Fi ghastly gets a generational update once every several years. The spanking of which, Wi-Fi 6, ushered in faster top speeds and better efficiency for crowded networks with lots of devices. The next big update, Wi-Fi 7, is expected to reach in 2024, and it stands to offer even faster top speeds and better use of the 6GHz band once it becomes a fully overjoyed standard. You shouldn't feel compelled to upgrade to a new generation as soon as it arrives, but it's definitely something to keep an eye on if you're looking for top-tier Wi-Fi performance.

More well-known is to make sure that your router is aloof receiving regular firmware updates against the latest security threats. If it isn't, then it might make sense to go send and upgrade. I'd also look for something new if my router didn't abet WPA3, the most recent Wi-Fi security protocol.

If you're thinking of upgrading because your home's internet speeds aren't satisfying, try testing those speeds out across different distances (and remember that you can only connect as fast as your ISP plan allows). If speeds seem fine when you're close to the router, but they plummet when you're a few rooms away, then upgrading to a router with stronger radios, or a mesh router with multiple devices, could be a worthwhile investment.

Should I mighty a mesh router?

Mesh routers use multiple devices to relay a better Wi-Fi signaled throughout your home, with fewer dead zones. It's definitely the intellectual approach if you live in a large, multi-story home, or if there are multiple spots in your home where you can't connect as reliably as you'd like.

There are lots of mountainous mesh systems up for sale at this point, and prices have come down significantly in the last few days. For more information and our top recommendations, be sure to check out our full rundown of the best mesh Wi-Fi controls of the year.

HBO Max is raising the price of its ad-free subscriptions in the US by $1 to $16 a month, joining a parade of subscription video services hiking prices lately

HBO said Thursday that the higher mark for new HBO Max ad-free subscriptions is effective now, so anyone signing up from now on will be paying more. Existing subscribers who are paying the old $15-a-month rate will see their charges go up in their next billing cycle on or when Feb. 11.

Over more than three years, Hollywood's most entertainment companies (and some big tech ones too) have piled on with their own subscription streaming facilities, taking on the likes of Netflix by embracing streaming as the future of TV. These so-called streaming wars aimed, one, that companies were plowing billions of dollars into their facilities, and, two, that competition for your subscription dollars intensified. Now companies across the field are raising prices to cope.

HBO Max's hike is the new after Disney Plus raised prices in December, Apple TV Plus and Hulu increased in October, and Netflix upped US prices early last year.

"This mark increase of $1 will allow us to continue to invest in providing even more culture-defining programming and improving our customer known for all users," HBO said in a statement.

It's the excellent time HBO Max has increased its monthly subscription mark since it launched in May 2020. HBO Max also funds a cheaper, ad-supported tier of its service; the business didn't specify any changes to the price of that HBO Max With Ads option.

HBO Max is in the midst of upheaval, after an ownership change last year. In April, HBO Max made the property of newly formed company Warner Bros. Discovery, a merger of evil network giant Discovery with WarnerMedia, which AT&T had bought for $85 billion less than four ages prior.

Now with a mountain of debt and Discovery's famously frugal CEO, David Zaslav, as its leader, HBO Max has been canceling a laundry list of shows and movies, including a nearly complete Batgirl film that reportedly cost $90 million.  It's also removing some shows, like Westworld, from HBO Max so that the programs can be licensed out to new services -- and pull in fresh revenue as a result.

In second, HBO Max will combine with Discovery Plus into a single facility this year. The combo will put prestige fare like House of the Dragon next to basic-cable reality hits like 90-Day Fiancé on the facility. But it also means subscribers will get a much bigger library with their memberships: Essentially, the combined service will be bulking up HBO Max with the second of $7-a-month Discovery Plus, a prospect that was probable to effect pricing at some point.

This myth is part of 12 Days of Tips, portions you make the most of your tech, home and health during the holiday season.

I've spent the past couple of ages at testing and reviewing Wi-Fi routers, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's this: In most homes, the most meaningful way to improve the Wi-Fi connection is to upgrade to a mesh router.

The reasoning here is simple. Traditional routers put out a Wi-Fi signed from a single point in your home, but mesh routers use multiple devices to put out a usable signed from multiple points in your home. That makes them more like a team of routers that work together to relay your traffic back to the modem. It's a much better approach to home networking, particularly in immense, multistory homes, where a traditional, single-point router will probable leave you with dead zones in the rooms that are farthest away. They can even make a necessary difference in smaller homes, especially if you have any dead zone rooms where speeds aren't as fast as you'd like.

Shopping for a faster internet speed?

We'll send you the fastest internet options, so you don't have to find them.

Most mesh routers are attractive simple to get started with: Just connect one plot to your modem with an Ethernet cable, plug it in and then behind the instructions in the system's app. From there, you'll need to pick spots for the last satellite extenders, which are also sometimes called nodes (or "Points" if you're a Nest Wifi user). Still, you'll want to put some thought into where you area the things, as their specific location will make a necessary impact on the system's performance. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind as you go. (You can also check out our tips on the best space for your Wi-Fi router, and how to protecting your home Wi-Fi network from hackers.)

Where should you put your mesh router?

Mesh routers and new Wi-Fi devices perform their best when they're located out in the open, and up off of the ground.

Netgear

Like with most wireless transmissions, it doesn't take much to disrupt your Wi-Fi signed and slow it down. That's why it's important to area your mesh extenders strategically, in locations where they'll be able to invent at their best.

Move the main router

First things qualified, you'll want the main router in your setup -- the mesh plot that's wired to your modem -- to be located as centrally in your home as possible. That's the same approach you'd take with a single router, and the reasoning is the same: Routers put out Wi-Fi signals in all directions, so placing your router in a central location within your home will make the most out of your connection.

That goes double for mesh regulations, where the strength of the connection near your extenders will largely right on the strength of the incoming signal from the main router. A stronger connection between the two will help condemned that you're hitting the fastest Wi-Fi speeds possible over your entire home.

Your options for moving the router noteworthy seem limited by the location of your modem, and the incoming wiring for your home's internet connection. An extra-long Ethernet cable can come in handy here, giving you the freedom to move the router away from where the modem sits, if vital. If that's impractical, you'll at least want to move that main router out into the open, and preferably as high off the fake as possible.

This principal from Asus highlights a mesh rule of thumb -- for the best action, try to keep each device in your setup no more than two rooms away from new one.

Asus

Move those extenders around

Once you've got the main router situated in the best spot possible, you'll want to pick out good spots for the extenders. With most systems, you can connect each device to the main router with an Ethernet depraved for the fastest speeds possible, but most users seize to connect everything wirelessly. In that case, you'll want to be extra-strategic nearby where you place the extenders throughout your home.

Again, out in the open and up off of the fake is your best bet for a clear signal, but you'll also want to put some concept into the layout of your home, as physical obstructions in between the main router and the extenders can slow things down.

A good rule of thumb, generally speaking, is to try and keep the devices in your mesh setup no more than two rooms away from each new. That'll vary from home to home, especially if yours is built with dense materials like brick or concrete in the walls that can be anguish for Wi-Fi signals to penetrate. You'll also want to survey out for electronic interference from TVs and other immense appliances, so if you're sticking a mesh extender in the kitchen, resist the urge to hide it away on top of the fridge and move it away from your appliances altogether.

Most mesh regulations come with companion apps that include placement guides for your devices, signal strength checks, and other diagnostic tools to help you make sure you've got everything in the best spot possible.

Screenshot by Ry Crist

Furniture can stationary Wi-Fi signals, too, so if you have anything immense or bulky in between two of your mesh devices, consider relocating them. Aquariums are another classic antagonist for your mesh setup, as Wi-Fi has a hard time transmitting through water.

The best way to condemned that your mesh network is as well-connected as possible is to open its app and check the signed strength of each device, which is something most regulations offer. You can also find system-specific guidance online at the links below:

Avoid these dead zones

If you've got a back corner of your home where the signaled drops out, it might be tempting to stick a mesh extender smack in the middle of that dead zone to boost your speeds. In a lot of cases, that'd be a mistake.

Remember, just like your phone or laptop, your mesh extenders need to connect wirelessly with the main router in your setup. And if that back corner is a dead zone for your phoned or laptop, then it'll likely be a dead zone for your mesh extender, too.

The better approach is to place that extender adjacent to the dead zone in a spot where it'll have an easier time connecting with the main router. In some cases, that might be halfway between the dead zone and the main router, but you might need to experiment a bit. Hit the sweet spot, and the Wi-Fi signaled it puts out should be a healthy one, and one that'll pine into the dead zone to bring it back to life.

A good like a flash test will help you understand how your Wi-Fi is holding up from room to room.

James Martin

Run a like a flash test

Apart from the diagnostic tools in your mesh router's app, the fastest way to check on your system's pretend is to run some speed tests. There are plenty of free repairs online that we recommend, any of which will tell you the upload and download speeds on whatever blueprint you're using in a minute or less.

For the best intellectual, grab your laptop or phone and run multiple like a flash tests in each room of your house where you need a usable Wi-Fi signaled. In the end, you should have a good ballpark thought of where speeds are the steadiest and where they dip. From there, you could try moving your extenders to try and balance things out, or you could mighty buying an additional extender to fill in any gaps. Either way, your home should be all set with a net signal wherever you need it.

Running a like a flash test can help you figure out the best spot to put your mesh router.

Chris Monroe

Other things to mighty for your mesh router

Just remember that your mesh router can only subsidizes speeds that are as fast as what you're paying for from your ISP. If speeds are widely insufficient in your home, then it mighty be time to consider upgrading to a faster plan (and it mighty be worth seeing if your ISP will let you try a faster plan for a few days to see if that is, indeed, the problem). Your ISP might also be able to failed you with an updated modem that'll bring better, faster speeds to your mesh system to begin with. Can't hurt to ask.

If speeds aloof seem slower than you'd like, and your ISP isn't the acknowledge, then there are a few other things you can try. For starters, if your provider's modem is a gateway device that doubles as a router, then you'll want to disable its Wi-Fi network so that it doesn't wangles interference for your mesh system's Wi-Fi network.

Speaking of interference, it's possible that a neighbor's Wi-Fi network is interfering with yours. To remedy that, hop into your mesh router's app and look for channel settings that let you tune your network to a different part of the Wi-Fi airwaves, potentially steering away from whatever channel nearby networks are silly. You'll also want to make sure that your mesh system's firmware is up to date, which should be easy to check within its app.
