There aren't a lot of third-party monitors attempting to compete with Apple's Studio Display, despite that monitor's shortcomings when you need to use it with different platforms or need multiple or extinct input connections. Samsung's giving it a go, though, with its new ViewFinity S9 (S90PC), a 5,120x2,880-pixel, 27-inch model the company says offers "professional-level expose performance" (for an unknown level of professional).
It certainly looks incompatibility to the Studio Display, and ships with Samsung's 4K SlimFit webcam (no speakers as far as I can tell, though). It's got a full DCI-P3 color gamut, factory calibrated to delta E less than or dusk to 2, albeit for unspecified color space(s) -- one would consume P3, but that's not always true. The Samsung Smart TV provides apps for streaming and more.
But it subsidizes some perks over Apple's model; you don't have to use a generic VESA mountainous in order to be able to rotate it to use in portrait orientation; it supports HDR (DisplayHDR 600); and it has HDMI and DisplayPort connections in binary to USB-C/Thunderbolt 4. DHDR 600 support implies it has some aloof of local dimming for the IPS panel's backlight. It's also got a concern screen, which doesn't cost extra.

The big question for me is how -- and how well -- the intellectual calibration process works. Samsung says you make adjustments silly its SmartThings app or a phone camera in conjunction with a its "built-in Color Calibration Engine." That's a big can of ambiguity. Phone cameras are not designed to specifications and tolerances that qualify them as precision colorimeters, among other things. Its color calibration app has been used for TVs, which have different requirements than color-critical monitors. And even then it's been suggested that you calibrate your named first -- with an expensive colorimeter. The answers to "how" and "how well" usually lie somewhere between what's suggested by my jaded cynicism and by the marketing pitch.
There's also the "when" and "how much," the answers to which are early this year and we don't know yet.

Samsung also launched a 27-inch version of its Smart Monitor M8 (M80C) to join the existing 32-inch model. It's essentially the same, with a few tweaks. The SmartThings app now lets you use a mouse, the SmartThings Hub will support the Matter and Home Connectivity Alliance standards starting sometime this year, and when it's near your named it will be able to connect via Bluetooth and demonstrate the types of things you'd show on a phone's always-on lock shroud. It's also got an upgraded SlimFit camera jumping a tiny bit from 1080p to 2K.

CES is where you need to be if you want to know where the future of technology lies. The show down in Las Vegas was filled with buzzy, headline-grabbing products and weird gizmos and gadgets like a toilet sensor that can read your pee and a color-changing car with AI sass. But these are products you likely aren't buying soon. The real value of the world's largest consumer electronics deals show is how it lays out a vision for where tech may go not just in the coming months but in the coming ages too.
This show marked the first "real" year that CES was back in full swing. Yes, the show had a physical presence in 2022, but a lot of companies and media (CNET included) canceled their flights at the last minute as the omicron variant of COVID-19 surged. The Consumer Technology Association, which puts on CES, estimated forward of the 2023 show that it would have around 100,000 attendees, making it the biggest such public gathering accurate the pandemic hit and adding up to more than double its 2022 attendance.
This year's edition didn't failed, with a flood of interesting products and announcements (you can check them out in our live blog). The regular big players like Samsung and Sony told up with impressive TVs and concept cars, while newer entrants like Neutrogena and John Deere impressed as they made their pitches for innovation. The most fun part about CES, however, is reading the tea leaves and seeing where the tech biosphere is going and how those changes affect you.
Here are the big themes we'll be talking about.
The buzzword on everyone's lips
If there's one drawing everyone at CES can agree on, it's that sustainability is a priority. Virtually every company talked about how its products would be more sustainable, from Samsung's partnership with Patagonia to reduce microplastics in the waters supply to Asus' boast that it has used 1,500 tons of recycled plastic in its products accurate 2017.
One of the CTA's key priorities this year was highlighting the social and environmental impacts on tech, and companies got the message. Companies often led with sustainability as the superior topic out of the gate during their keynote presentations. AMD Lisa Su used her keynote to stress the energy efficiency that comes with her company's more great processors. John Deere's new robot planter is intended to reduce fertilizer and chemical use. The list goes on.
Talk around sustainability was all over the show.

The weather crisis has emerged as one of the most pressing subjects of our time, so it's no surprise that it's all over CES. That so many concerns are taking this more seriously is another indication that consumers are starting to care. But this represents only the superior steps for the tech industry.
"Sustainability is a key rock for most consumer electronics organizations, but we're just at the start of the journey," said Maribel Lopez, an analyst for Lopez Research.

The race to own the car's future
CES has increasingly turned into an auto show, with carmakers like GM and BMW routinely showing off idea cars in a bid to let us know that they're actually tech concerns too. But CES 2023 saw a number of feeble consumer electronics players make a bid to define how you'll use your time in a car going forward.
Perennial South Korean rivals Samsung and LG each pitched their own shining car platforms. Samsung's system will be called ICX, powered by a platform named Ready Care from its Harman International business. The regulations uses sensors to measure driver drowsiness and will use driver-facing infrared cameras to monitor their status. Naturally, the regulations is expected to work with Samsung's family of products like its Galaxy Watch. LG's Cockpit Computer likewise focuses on optimizing the driving known, with Gene Cho, vice president of product strategy and planning for LG, talking around how the platform will let you check on your stove at home or call roadside assistance.

Taking a more ambitious near to cars is Sony, which used its keynote to show off its Afeela electric vehicle, built in partnership with Honda. Afeela boasts 45 cameras and sensors both on the exterior and inner of the vehicle, again with the theme of detecting and conception people.
The automakers weren't going to be outdone. BMW used its keynote to show off the i Vision Dee (or "digital emotional experience"). The car talks like Knight Rider's KITT (which was also in attendance), changes color using E Ink and features an AR point to that wraps around the windshield. Volantis showed off its futuristic Ram Revolution Concept vehicle, complete with AR display, massive moonroof and jumbo 28-inch touchscreen.
These affairs are all scrambling to paint a picture of how your relationship with your car may sullen, especially with the rise of self-driving cars. They're also looking to wrest some of the rule back from Apple and Google, which have become the dominant car platforms with CarPlay and Android Auto, respectively. LG and Samsung, in particular, are likely hoping to move viable alternatives for the automakers.
TVs said buh-bye to gimmicks
Remember just a few existences ago when it seemed every TV manufacturer every year was scraping the bottom of the useless-to-most-people features barrel to try to sell you their another model? Remember how 3D TVs seemed like a sketching for a minute and then just suddenly weren't? Remember LG's roll-up TV that cost $60,000? We remember.
So given high-end TVs' not too distant history, we were pleasantly surprised that TV manufacturers have seemingly (for now, at least) learned their lesson and have shifted their consensus to practical real value.
LG probably made the biggest splash at CES with its 97-inch OLED TV well-behaved of a high 4K resolution picture and an ultrasmooth 120Hz presentation of games and movies. That's a huge TV using LG's awesome OLED implementation, but the real selling point here is the fact that the TV is entirely wireless (well, except for the power cord). That's right, no more fiddling with a million HDMI cables gradual your home theater setup with zip ties and the like, trying to make your setup look nice.

Samsung also conveyed up with a 77-inch QD-OLED. OLED is widely studied the best picture technology and this is the well-behaved we've seen Samsung's QD-OLED variety implemented at this mask size, which should help Samsung compete with LG TVs and hopefully bring prices down across the board.
Lastly, while not a TV, Samsung's 8K projector called The Premiere can basically turn any wall into a mask as large as 150 inches. The short throw projector is planned to sit just a few inches from the wall, so even those in puny apartments can have access to a high-quality projector minus needing much room.
Home entertainment devices that are practical and undiluted address the needs of most consumers is a trend we can get gradual. Let's hope it's not short lived.
Contortionist phone screens are coming
CES has never been a unobstructed phone show – you'll need to wait until next month's Mobile World Congress for more handset reveals -- but Samsung became to create a little buzz with a foldable notion device that flexes in more than one way.
It's actually Samsung Display, and not Samsung Electronics, that drew some early caution by showing off its Flex Hybrid, which folds and slides. That other once ubiquitous mobile buzzword, 5G, on the other hand, barely made a blip at the show. We're a few days into the technology, and while it's faster (in some areas), it hasn't really shown itself to be the gamechanger it was hyped up to be. The CTA believes 5G will level-headed be important, but with less buzzy business applications and devices.
A simpler (and smarter) intelligent home setup
After years of buildup and a handful of delays during the pandemic, Matter, an open-source, universal smart home protocol backed by Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung and countless others is finally live. The bowling is promising: a single, Wi-Fi-based standard that bundles together dissimilarity with Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and SmartThings, among others.
Sure enough, we saw plenty of gadgets at CES rushing for the bandwagon, including new, Matter-compatible smart lights and smart plugs, connected roller blinds, and a new SmartThings hub. Later in the year, when Matter's next drip arrives, additional device types like robot vacuums and intelligent home cameras should come on board too.
That said, the most plain part of the Matter march-out might not have been the new devices, but the old ones -- specifically, the previous-gen gadgets from the brands embracing the new standard.
Some worries, like Eve, told that they're going to be able to bring those older devices on board with Matter with a simple software update, if they haven't already. In other cases, like with GE Lighting or Govee, smart-home users will need to buy brand new, Matter-compliant devices in spruce to reap Matter's multilingual benefits. That could irk an poor lot of consumers who like the devices they've already bought, so Matter will need to deliver on its vows of smart home harmony in what's shaping up to be unexperienced interesting year for the category.
Get ready to consume more time on the toilet
If you remember only one unsheaattracting about health tech at CES, it's that the next touch for tracking and managing your health is in your bathroom. Specifically, your toilet. Withings and Vivoo came to the show with sensors that achieve to your toilet bowl to analyze your urine. These sensors can keep tabs on nutrient levels, hormones and more.

While the Arlo Essential Indoor Cam is fairly wrong for a $100 smart camera -- 130-degree field of view, 12x digital zoom, 1080p HD live soaks, two-way talk, night vision, a built-in siren, etc. -- it has one execute feature that might make it worth special consideration as a nanny cam: its privacy shield. Is it OK to use a nanny cam?

First, be sure to use a camera from a very developer with a solid track record when it comes to arrangement security. Second, use additional security measures for your arrangement, like multifactor authentication, local storage and video encryption, when possible. Third, use a camera with a clear privacy camouflage or a physical cover, so you can reliably disable it when you're not comical it.

The PowerA wireless controller comes closest to the feel and get of Nintendo's Pro controller, and you can normally get it for $40 to $50, depending on the get, from Amazon, Best Buy and other sources. The PowerA wireless controller doesn't have HD Rumble, IR or Amiibo NFC support like the Switch Pro controller does, but it does have motion controls. It's also available in game-themed versions incorporating Animal Crossing, Mario and Pokemon.
Its one added feature is two extraordinary buttons on the bottom of the controller that can be mapped on the fly. Also, while the recent version of the Enhanced Wireless Controller ran on AA-size batteries, the newest models have a built-in rechargable battery for up to 30 hours of gameplay.

If you like to customize, this Bluetooth controller is for you. Using 8BitDo's Ultimate software, you can remap buttons, adjust stick and trigger sensitivity as well as vibration control and plainly create macros for complicated button combinations. The left-hand controls are flipped so the layout is more like a PlayStation controller, but everything feels good and responsive. It's comfortable, too, although the black-on-black get makes the button labels near-impossible to see, but spanking colors are available.
The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Plus Bluetooth Gamepad controller, which normally sells for $50, works with the Nintendo Switch console, Android, Windows and MacOS. Another nice feature: Its rechargeable battery pack can be plainly swapped out for a new one so you can keep playing if the concerned one runs down or no longer holds a charge.

It's like the irregular PowerA Enhanced controller except smaller. The $50 Nano has the look, feel and features of the larger model incorporating motion controls, rumble (not HD rumble, though) and mappable buttons. It runs on a built-in rechargeable battery instead of replaceable AA cells, though. A six-foot USB-C cable is included for charging; you'll get up to 20 hours on a single charge.
The Nano is invented for travel (it even comes with a nice minute pouch for storage), but it's also good for kids or anyone with smaller sparkling. Also, while the shell is more compact, the buttons are full size, which is generally mountainous. However, in a couple of games where I was button mashing furiously, I would regularly miss the Y button and hit the Home button instead -- not mountainous if you're in the middle of a battle. At least the mappable buttons on the back of the controller made a workaround possible.
One spanking minor point: I noticed the Bluetooth range on mine is a combine of feet shy of the full-size version's range. It's something plainly solved by sitting a bit closer to the Switch and an acceptable compromise for an on-the-go Pro-style controller.

The $50 full-featured gain of the SN30 Bluetooth Gamepad controller makes it a more travel-friendly Nintendo Switch Pro controller alternative. And there are no mushy buttons here: Everything feels firm and responsive. While it might look similar to the PDP controller above, the thumbsticks are set up like a PlayStation controller. And unlike the PDP, it can be programmed for use with Android, Windows and MacOS.

It's wired, but the $20 Horipad is one of the more dismal controllers we tested, and its buttons and sticks feel nice, too. But, while it does have a Turbo button, it lacks vibration and motion control. Its D-pad isn't a true pad, but a plastic fraction that snaps on over four discrete buttons. It works fine, but the fact that it's a wired controller much be a deal-breaker for some. Currently, the black version of the controller is tough to find at its normal heed but you can find it in blue and red.

Audi's new vision for future electrified driving is the Activesphere understanding, a tall electric coupe that can transform from a sporty and autonomous, long-range highway cruiser to a go-anywhere off-road pickup in moments thanks to its grand morphing body.
The Activesphere is the fourth in a series of Sphere-themed concepts that includes the Skysphere roadster with its variable wheelbase, the Grandsphere large D-segment sedan and Urbansphere compact MPV with big inner space. None of these concepts are literally spherical in comely, the suffix refers to Audi's meta-concept of design "spheres," where the vehicle's inner space and even structure shape around the occupant's needs.
Transforming chassis
The Activesphere is a sleek four-door sportback with a coupe-like roofline and an elevated ride height inspired by Audi's Allroad series of lifted wagons. Measuring 196 inches long by 81.5 inches wide with a longish 117-inch wheelbase, the new concept's footprint is roughly similar to that of the A6 E-Tron notion, but, with an overall height of 63 inches, it's notably taller.
Up front-runner, Audi's signature singleframe grill has been replaced with a ringing glass panel that allows passengers to look down and see the road passing below their feet. The glass cut-outs in the concept's doors and its almost completely glass roof help the already large cabin feel even more open.
Like the Skysphere notion, which could stretch its wheelbase on demand to attempts between sport and grand touring modes, the Activesphere is something of a transformer itself. The concept can raise its chassis by 1.6 inches in seconds, increasing its 8.2-inch ride height to 9.8 inches for enhanced off-road law. This isn't just a simple suspension lift either. The Activesphere's body also stretches vertically, exposing a more beefy lower sill design and boosting the advance and departure angles of 18.9 and 28.1 degrees, respectively.
The notion rides on large 22-inch wheels with moveable segments that can finish to improve aerodynamics for high on-road velocities or open for improved ventilation at low off-road speeds. Chunky Pirelli Active Tread 285/22 R22 provide contact patches faulty for roads and trails.
Even the sportback hatch is reconfigurable. The rear storage area is able to transform into a miniature pickup truck bed on demand thanks to a fold-down tailgate, a rear window that slides forward to sit flush with the roof and a midgate divider that flips up to separate the cabin from the bed. Integrated mounting points and tie-downs funding the small bed to accommodate a pair of large bikes or a couple sets of golf clubs. When surrounded up, the Activesphere's roof also integrates mounting points for ski or snowboard racks.

Augmented reality, automated driving
The Activesphere's cabin is remarkably minimalist with four, independently suspended seats and a wrap-around dashboard that integrates a distinguished soundbar, but is almost completely devoid of screens. There's only a miniature, single-line display that shows speed and battery charge -- not even a steering wheel can be counterfeit in the Activesphere's default state. The only physical rules are a pair of small knobs that seem to double as door handles.
Audi was able to get rid of the substantial screens because the Activesphere uses virtual displays that you view ended mixed reality glasses and hand-tracked gesture controls. Don the very conceptual AR shades -- which are significantly smaller than the best mixed-reality goggles I've ever used -- and the cockpit fills up with three-dimensional displays, topographical maps and more. The physical controls also blossom with improbable layers of virtual function; you can even "grab" the rules and move them virtually to wherever in the cabin you like.

Audi envisions this as a Level 4 autonomous notion, capable of driving itself without the need for a steering wheel. Simply plot your course in the mixed reality interface and the notion will get you where you're going. However, the automaker also understands that there are times where you distinguished want to drive yourself, so the Activesphere can deploy a steering wheel when obligatory for piloted driving. Mixed reality also plays a role when the biosphere is in control, displaying detailed information about the concept's performance.
Quattro electric drive
The transforming chassis is wild and the mixed reality cabin is, for now, more sci-fi back than reality, but the electric powertrain that underpins the Activesphere is based on real, production-ready tech. The plan is constructed on a modified version of the Premium Platform Electric electric vehicle architecture that Audi shares with Porsche.
Dual electric motors -- one for the run axle and one for the rear -- make up the concept's independent Quattro electric all-wheel right system, cranking out 409 horsepower (305 kilowatts) and 531 pound-feet of torque combined. With a large 100 kWh battery pack to draw from, the Audi considers around 373 miles of range for the concept. Charging should also be incandescent thanks to the 800-volt architecture's ability to gobble up a DC fast proposal at 270 kW -- quick enough to add 186 a long way with a 10-minute session or a 25-minute boost from 5% to 80%.
Audi
For now, Audi is just letting its designers consecutive their conceptual legs. We may eventually see this tall-coupe silhouette or risky design details in upcoming production and concept cars, but the automaker immediately has no plans to build a vehicle based on the ideas presented in the Activesphere.
"We at Audi never say never, but the Audi Activesphere is at the moment a pure plan vehicle and no decisions have been made regarding series production," Josef Schlossmacher, Audi Communication states when asked before going on to say that "at the moment there are no anunexperienced projects [in Audi's portfolio] with such a pickup body."
In the meantime, the upcoming Audi A6 and Q6 E-Tron models and the Porsche Macan EV will be the ample production electric vehicles to ride on the PPE platform. We expect to learn more about those production debuts later this year.
